Patriot Daylily Society

Saturday, December 2, 2017, noon to 3 P.M.

Holiday Party at Kate Reed’s

 36 Naushon Road, Pawtucket, RI

Come, relax, enjoy yourself. As is usual for big occasions, we will have a potluck.

There will be at least one hearty soup and a meat platter but Kate has three crock pots, three platter warmers, an oven and a microwave and one-and-a-half refrigerators, so there are more options than usual. If you are arriving on the early side perhaps an appetizer would be a good choice; or if you tend to run late, a dessert. Also, please bring beverages, "adult" (which, presumably, means booze) or otherwise. Kate will provide coffee and tea. Please call Kate at 401-359-7361 or e-mail her (katydaylily@yahoo.com) with your positive reply to attend, so that food quantities (hearty soups and stews) can be determined, and to let her know what you will be bringing.

Directions to Kate Reedʼs from eastern and central Mass:

Pick up I-95 south into Attleboro, Mass.

Take exit 2A - Massachusetts Route 1A south; cross into Rhode Island, you are on Newport Avenue.

Go about 2 miles; turn left (at a traffic light and CVS) onto Armistice Boulevard, which is Route 15 east.

Go about 0.8 mile, passing the entrance to Slater Park (which has a big clamshell monument to honor veterans) on your right.

Cross Ten Mile River and take an immediate right onto Alexander McGregor Road (opposite Pawtucket Country Club), then take third left onto Naushon Road (street sign may be missing).

#36 is the plum-colored colonial on the left, opposite Tashmoo Way.(If you miss the turn onto McGregor and you find yourself passing the Country Club, take a right onto Pequot into the same development and Naushon will be your third left. Do not be confused by adjacent Naushon Court.)

If the weather is bad on December 2 (or predicted to be ), go to

to verify that the party is still on and has not been postponed. We will try to have any announcement of postponement posted before 10 AM on the day of the party. (This is a public area - no need to log in to see the message.)

Dan Bachman (Valley of the Daylilies)

Lebanon, Ohio

Dan and Jackie Bachman operate a plant farm which specializes in daylilies, where they grow more than 3800 daylily cultivars, plus thousands of new seedlings under evaluation from Dan's breeding program. Valley of the Daylilies is an AHS display garden, and a commercial sales garden, plus the hybridizing program. The Bachmans also grow several hundred hostas, iris, peonies and other perennials which are available at the farm. They always enjoy visits, scheduled or unscheduled, during growing season.

Valley Of The Daylilies has the most complete collection of spider and unusual form daylilies found anywhere (including Dan's own hybrid introductions). The farm also has an extensive collection of historic (pre-1980) cultivars. Peak bloom is generally early July (Zone 6A, 30 miles north of Cincinnati and 70 miles south of Columbus). Each year in early July the "Northern Mecca" open gardens feature a half-dozen or more of the top hybridizers in southwestern Ohio, with the Northern Mecca annual picnic at Valley Of The Daylilies on Saturday night of that weekend event.

Dan is currently in the midst of his annual pre-lining-out sale, with hundreds of cultivars on sale at the website store (www.valleyofthedaylilies.com), from 25% to 60% off (look for price markdowns in the listings). All sizes, forms and price ranges are included, and many Bachman introductions are available. (Some varieties are limited.) The sale ends September 30, and Dan notes that if you order plants from him in September he will hand-deliver them to you (space permitting - first come, first served) at the October 7 meeting, thereby saving you shipping charges.
